  When a King loves

  He loves hard

  CADE

I’ve loved her since we were five years old.

We grew up side by side.

Two kids tied together by the Kings of Mayhem Motorcycle Club.

  But I broke us.

  I broke her.

  So, she fled.

Now she’s back after twelve long years.

And I’m going to show her all the reasons why we should be together and make her forget all the reasons why we shouldn’t.

  INDY

I’m back in town but only because I have to be.

I’m here to help my mom bury my father.

And the sooner we get it done, the better.

Because I want to see Cade as much as I want a hole in the head.

He broke me once—no, he broke my everything—and I’ll be damned if I’ll let him do it again.

Get in and get out. That is the plan.

But you know what they say about best-laid plans.

  To Rachael, Stephanie & Laurie,

  my beta beauties. xx

  About the Author

  West Destiny High School

We hid under the desks. The entire room was quiet except for the occasional sob from Leslie Winters a few desks away.

“Ssssh,” Brody Meyers, the school star quarterback hissed. “Or you’ll get us all killed.”

He was crouched awkwardly beneath a science table, his body shaking as he clutched onto one of the table legs.

Across the aisle, Leslie sobbed again but this time it was silent and she dropped her head to her chest as another round of terror wracked her body.

I watched them, wishing they’d both shut the fuck up before they got us killed.

My eyes shifted to Indy crouching beside me. She was biting her bottom lip and her eyes were filled with fear. I’d known her my entire life and I had never seen fear in those beautiful eyes of hers. Indigo Parrish wasn’t someone who scared easily. But right now her big brown eyes were gleaming with it and I knew I had to do something about it.

I leaned forward and mashed my lips to hers. Her eyes widened when I pulled away and began backing out from under the safety of the desk.

“Cade, no …!” She pleaded. But it was just a whisper, because somewhere out in that hallway, Travis Hawthorne was on the hunt for blood, and if he heard us he would come and kill us all. We knew he was strapping some serious firepower with the sole in
tention of taking out as many of us as possible.

I gave my girl the cocky, lopsided grin I knew she loved. The one she spent hours kissing because she was so damn in love with me. It was my way of silently comforting her. Of letting her know that I would always protect her. I had loved her my whole life. Ever since we were little and she used to climb into my bedroom window and slip into my bed because her parents were fighting again and she needed to escape. We were neighbors. Our parents were friends. We were club kids. She was the love of my life.

“I’ll be back,” I whispered with a wink.

I snuck across the room and paused at the door, my heart thundering in my chest.

“Cade, get down!” Our chem teacher, Mr Lemon, hissed. “Get the hell down now before you get shot!”

I ignored him and said a silent prayer as I opened the classroom door. I swallowed deep. The hallway wasn’t empty. Travis Hawthorne was only a few feet away, stalking the corridor like a hunter stalking his prey. His back was to me but he swung around when he heard the quiet click of the door behind me. His face was dark and sinister. His eyes bright and crazy. He was clearly surprised to see me, and for a moment we just stared at one another and all I could hear was the pounding of my heartbeat in my ears.

Travis was brandishing a 12-gauge shotgun, which he aimed right at my chest.

Standing there I figured this could go one of two ways: Travis Hawthorne could shoot and kill me—which would set off a world of trouble for the Hawthorne family. Or, I could use my greatest weapon—my ability to talk myself out of most situations—and we would both live to tell the story.

I held my hands up in surrender.

“Dude, you don’t want to shoot me,” I said. Not the smartest of one-liners, but it was the first thing that came to mind.

Clearly, I hadn’t thought this through.

“What are you doing?” Travis’s eyes narrowed as he came toward me, walking with the determination of an approaching soldier. A yard away from me he stopped and yelled, “What the fuck are you doing, Cade?”

It was a good question. All I knew is that I had my girl to protect.

“I hate to say it, Travis, but you know who my family is—this isn’t the first time I’ve had a loaded 12-gauge pointed at me.”

Up this close, I could see the crazy in his eyes. Yep. Chances were this wasn’t going to end well.

“You are a cocky son of a bitch,” he snarled.

  “Probably.”

I nodded and he aimed his gun higher, taking it from my chest to my face.

“What makes you so fucking sure that I won’t shoot you?”

I thought for a moment, my mind racing, but I was calm as I asked, “Do you love your mom?”

Not expecting the question, he looked confused. Then he frowned. “What?”

“I said, do you love your mom?” I tried to keep my voice steady, but my heart was going like a racecar in my chest. “Your sister? What’s her name? Eve? The pretty little thing with the long blonde hair…”

His eyes narrowed. “What the fuck are you talking about, Cade? Don’t you talk about my mom!” He jabbed the business end of the 12-gauge shotgun closer to my face as he yelled. “And don’t you talk about my sister like that! What are you doing?”

“You kill me, Travis, and you know my family will go after yours.” My eyes held his steady. And I talked fast, because at any second this psychopath could blast me across the corridor and into the chem lab with a gaping 12-gauge shotgun wound to my chest. This was a fucking stupid idea. I should never have left the classroom. But there was no turning back now. I had to keep my voice steady and my confident façade in place. “If you shoot me, they will go after everyone, Travis. Your mom. Your dad. Your sweet, sweet sister. Hell, Travis, they’ll even go after your cousins. Second and third cousins, too. And they won’t stop until every last one of the Hawthorne’s are wiped from the face of the Earth.”

Going by the look on his face, he hadn’t expected me to say that. He hadn’t considered it. His eyes narrowed and he went to say something, but I stopped him. He was probably going to shoot me now anyway, so I might as well get as much in as possible before I went down in a hail of shotgun lead. I was too far in to back out now.

“And I promise you this, Travis—what my family will do won’t be as pretty as the shotgun blast you take me out with. What they’ll do to them… it will require getting up close and personal. Especially with your mom. Especially with your sweet, sweet sister Eve.”

What I was implying wasn’t true.

My family wouldn’t hurt the women. They wouldn’t touch them. Or rape them. My family might be mean sonsofbitches when they needed to be, but they didn’t vent vengeance on women. And they certainly didn’t rape. My granddaddy would roll over in his grave, cursing the day he ever started the MC if they started doing that shit. Sure, they didn’t exactly treat all women well—especially the young, eager ones who hung around the club waiting for MC cock—but they did look after their old ladies. Most of the time.

But my daddy could be unpredictable. And boy, he could be mean. Vicious. You didn’t fuck with Garrett Calley and get to walk away. But he didn’t hurt women. And he wouldn’t let anyone in the club get away with that shit either.

But Travis didn’t know that. He dropped his aim a little. He knew the Kings of Mayhem were bad motherfuckers. Which was good, because I wanted him to think the worst. And judging by the flicker of unease in his eyes, it was working.

But he suddenly frowned and raised his aim again.

“Don’t you say that!” he yelled, shaking the barrel of the gun and jabbing me in the chest.

I shrugged, like it was no big deal. But my heart was doing its best to beat itself out of my body.

“It’s the truth, Travis. You pull that trigger and your entire family is gone.” I was desperate to swallow the big damn lump in my throat. But more determined to show him that I wasn’t afraid of him. Which wasn’t true. Because I was fucking terrified. But I had Indy to think about. And my younger brother, Caleb, and my cousins, Isaac and Abby, who were somewhere nearby. I also had an entire high school of friends cowering under desks, terrified they were going to be blown away by this psycho.

Ha. And I was the one they called crazy.

The tip of the shotgun pressed deeper into my chest.

Then again, maybe they were right. After all, I was standing in front of this nutball with a loaded shotgun pointed at my chest—so clearly my peers had a point.

“Think about your mom, Travis. Think about Eve.”

At the mention of his sister’s name Travis Hawthorne’s eyes unfocused and he looked distant.

It took a split second for me to grab the barrel of the shotgun and rip it out of his grasp. Panicking, he reached for the Glock he had holstered to his hip, but he lost his grip when I hit him in the jaw with the butt of the shotgun.

I took aim, but he grabbed me and we both crashed to the floor. The Glock and 12-gauge spun across the linoleum and we both struggled to reach them with our outstretched arms.

With one well-placed knee I got him straight in the balls, and he growled with pain and curled up like a Roly poly. I launched for the closest weapon, and the instant my fingers curled around the handle of the Glock, I leapt to my feet and took aim.

  Then I shot him.

For as long as I could remember, Indy and I had always talked about going away to college. When she got into med school, I applied to a college nearby and was accepted. Excited, we spent the summer planning our home together. Life was looking good. We would be far away from the club life that Indy hated so much.

Me, I didn’t mind club life. I liked growing up in the club. I liked the camaraderie and brotherhood. But I loved Indy more, and if she moved to hell, then I’d follow her. She was my girl and I’d walk through fire for the rest of my life if I had to.

Until the West Destiny High School shootings, our life had been pretty good. But Travis Hawthorne shooting up our high schoo
l set off a string of events that changed everything.

When I shot Travis, I only wounded him. A bullet to the right shoulder stopped him from carrying out anymore of his psychopathic plan. He would live, but it would probably have been better for him if he hadn’t.

Me, I was labeled a hero. Cade fucking Calley—the son of the President of the Kings of Mayhem MC—a fucking hero.

  Who would have thought?

For years I was the bad boy of West Destiny High School. The one who would never amount to much. The one who surprised the fuck out of every one of his teachers when he achieved the high SAT scores and got his choice of colleges. All of a sudden, he was the good guy.

At first, my dad was pissed at me for confronting an armed Travis. He said my balls were bigger than my brains and that someday they’d get me shot dead. My mom was furious and called me a stupid asshole. The police were pissed at me, too. They were all right, of course. What I did was stupid. Plain stupid. I was lucky I wasn’t lying in the funeral home.

Three nights after the shooting, the MC decided to celebrate my heroism with a party at the clubhouse. MC parties were legendary. They could go on for days and, more often than not, they got very messy and rowdy.

The afternoon of the party I lay with Indy on her bed in her room. Her mom was at the clubhouse with the other old ladies setting up for the party, while her dad—the club’s VP—was out with my dad.

We spent the afternoon naked and enjoying every inch of one another’s bodies. Looking down at her, I felt so crazy in love with her that I had to make love to her again.

“You’re such a hero,” she teased.

“I did it all for you,” I whispered against her ear. “Because you’re my girl.”

She had snuggled into me, and the familiar smell of her had made all my insides feel warm and happy. She was the light in all my darkness.

“I feel so safe with you,” she whispered.

I cupped her face in my hands. “I’d do everything and anything to keep you safe, baby.”

She smiled and dragged her teeth across her bottom lip. “Tomorrow we start our new life together, college boy.”
